Perception

the process of noticing and making sense of what is seen.

Perception is the process of noticing and making sense of what is seen. In cyber security, that matters because defenders rarely react to raw data alone; they react to what an analyst, sensor, or model believes the data means. A log line, packet trace, camera frame, or endpoint alert can be misread if context is missing or the signal is distorted.

Attackers exploit limits in perception by hiding in noise, using fast changes, spoofing visuals, or forcing tools to see the wrong thing. Defenders counter this by correlating sources, slowing down analysis, and using detections that focus on behavior instead of appearance. The drone blur example is a useful reminder: an object may still be present even when it becomes hard to interpret. In security work, that gap between seeing and understanding is where mistakes, evasions, and missed alerts often happen.
