A payroll database is the system that stores salary data, contract details, tax records, bank information, and employee identifiers used to pay staff and manage workforce administration. It often contains a dense mix of financial and personal data, which makes it more sensitive than a normal business records store.
In cyber security, payroll databases are high-value targets because attackers can use the contents for extortion, fraud, identity theft, and phishing. Ransomware groups may also target related backups or exports, since a stolen SQL backup can expose the same data as the live system. Defenders should limit access, separate backups, encrypt sensitive fields, and monitor for unusual queries or bulk exports. Strong logging and least-privilege controls help reduce the impact if an attacker reaches the payroll environment.
