Pay-as-you-go is a pricing model where a security product charges based on actual usage instead of a fixed subscription. In cloud security, that usage might be the number of assets scanned, API calls made, gigabytes processed, or events analyzed. This model can be attractive because it matches spend to scale, but it can also make costs harder to predict as data volume, workloads, or scan frequency increase.
In cyber security, pay-as-you-go matters because tooling must be deployed broadly to be effective. If a DSPM, logging, or detection platform bills per scan or per data unit, teams may limit coverage, slow investigations, or skip continuous monitoring to control cost. Defenders should check exactly what is metered, set budgets and alerts, and test expected usage before rollout. Attackers do not target the pricing model itself, but they can benefit when organizations under-scan or under-monitor to avoid charges.
