Pattern discovery

The process of identifying repeated structures or relationships in data.

Pattern discovery is the process of identifying repeated structures, relationships, or anomalies in data. In cyber security, it helps analysts make sense of large log sets, network flows, file samples, and user activity. A system may spot a suspicious login sequence, a recurring malware signature, or a common phishing template that would be hard to see manually.

It matters because many attacks leave subtle traces rather than obvious alarms. Defenders use pattern discovery in intrusion detection, threat hunting, malware clustering, and fraud detection to find behavior that deviates from the norm. Attackers use the same idea to study security controls, learn typical user behavior, and tune malware to avoid detection. The key limitation is that a detected pattern is only an indicator, not proof of intent or compromise. Good security practice pairs pattern discovery with validation, context, and human review.
