Pattern detection

The process of spotting repeated behavior that may indicate risk or abuse.

Pattern detection is the process of identifying repeated or related behavior across messages, accounts, devices, logs, or sessions. In cyber security, it helps defenders turn many small signals into one meaningful warning, such as repeated login failures, identical phishing wording, unusual account switching, or bursts of contact from the same source. The goal is not to react to every single event, but to notice when events fit a suspicious shape.

This matters because attackers often rely on scale, repetition, and concealment. Malware campaigns may reuse infrastructure, social engineering may reuse scripts, and abuse cases may show repeated outreach or escalation over time. Security teams use pattern detection in monitoring tools, fraud systems, and threat hunting to spot abuse earlier, preserve evidence, and trigger investigation before harm grows. Good pattern detection also reduces false positives by comparing current activity with known normal behavior.
