Patch diff

A comparison between patched and unpatched code used to identify what changed.

A patch diff is the before-and-after comparison between vulnerable code and the fixed version. It may be built from source changes, binary analysis, or decompiled output, and it highlights the lines, functions, or logic paths that were modified. Security teams use patch diffs to understand what a fix actually changes, confirm that a vulnerability is closed, and check whether related code paths still need review.

Patch diffs matter because attackers use the same information. When a fix is published, the diff can reveal the exact flaw, making reverse engineering faster and helping criminals craft exploits for unpatched systems. This is a common driver of N-day exploitation, where a known weakness is targeted after the patch exists but before deployment is complete. Defenders reduce risk by patching quickly, prioritizing exposed services, and validating that the fix fully removes the vulnerable behavior.
