A patch chain is the sequence of organizations that must transform a vulnerability fix into an update that reaches real devices. In shared-hardware ecosystems, the chip vendor may publish a correction first, but OEMs, carriers, platform integrators, and other operators still need to package, sign, test, and distribute it.
This matters because every step adds delay and possible failure. Attackers benefit when a fix is slow to move through the chain, especially for firmware, mobile devices, embedded systems, network gear, and vehicles that update on long maintenance cycles. Defenders use the same concept to plan remediation: identify which vendor owns each layer, verify exact hardware and firmware versions, follow downstream advisories, and apply compensating controls such as segmentation or reduced wireless exposure while waiting for the patched build.
