Patch baseline

The current level of security fixes installed on a device or system.

A patch baseline is the current set of security fixes installed on a device, operating system, or application. It is the reference point defenders use to judge whether a system is fully updated, partly updated, or missing critical fixes. In practice, the baseline is often tied to a version number, build, or monthly update level.

Patch baselines matter because many attacks target known vulnerabilities that have already been fixed. If a device remains below the expected baseline, it may still be exposed to exploits, malware delivery, or privilege escalation. In defense, teams compare asset inventories against the required baseline to find lagging systems, enforce compliance, and prioritize patching. On consumer devices, delayed firmware rollouts can create short windows where some devices are protected and others are not. Checking the installed build is the safest way to verify real security status.
