A passport scan is a digital image or copy of the identity page of a passport. It usually contains the holder’s name, photo, date of birth, nationality, passport number, and other identifiers that can be used to verify identity or complete forms.
In cyber security, passport scans are high-value personal data because they can support account takeover, fake onboarding, social engineering, and identity fraud. Attackers may seek them in breached document stores, HR systems, client portals, or leak posts that advertise stolen files to increase pressure on a victim. Even if a claim is unverified, the presence of passport scans in a file list signals serious privacy exposure. Defenders should protect them with strong access control, encryption, data minimization, and logging, and should validate whether such images were actually accessed, copied, or exfiltrated during an incident.
