A parts bin is a stock of spare, salvaged, or recovered components kept for later use. In electronics and hardware labs, it can include connectors, boards, chips, cables, and other items that were removed from older systems but may still function or be useful as replacements.
In cyber security, parts bins matter because hardware often needs trusted spares for repair, testing, and incident recovery. Defenders use them to replace failed devices quickly, build test rigs, and validate whether a component is still safe to reuse. Attackers can also exploit the same supply of parts to source matching hardware for counterfeit repairs, device cloning, or physical tampering. Because recovered parts may have an unknown history, teams should check provenance, firmware state, and physical integrity before putting them back into service.
