Paravirtualized device

A virtual device designed for performance and tighter guest-host communication.

A paravirtualized device is a virtual hardware interface built to communicate more directly with the hypervisor than fully emulated devices. Instead of pretending to be a physical NIC, disk controller, or other device, it uses a guest-aware driver and shared protocols to reduce overhead and improve performance.

In cyber security, these devices matter because they sit on the guest-host boundary. Their efficiency also makes them complex, and bugs in the driver or hypervisor-side implementation can create memory corruption or logic flaws. Attackers may abuse them after gaining code execution or admin rights inside a VM to try to escape isolation, while defenders should treat them as part of the trust boundary, keep them patched, and disable unnecessary integration features where possible.
