Package takeover

An attack class where an attacker can publish or replace releases for a legitimate package name.

Package takeover is an attack class in which an attacker gains the ability to publish, replace, or impersonate releases for a legitimate package name. The goal is not always to steal a maintainer’s password; sometimes the attacker abuses weak account recovery, expired ownership, repository rename confusion, or a flawed publishing trust check to get malicious code into the normal update stream.

This matters because package managers and build systems usually trust package names and version updates by default. If a popular dependency is taken over, downstream projects may install the attacker’s release as routine maintenance. Defenders reduce this risk by using immutable publisher identity, verified provenance, multi-factor authentication, release approvals, reserved names, and review of trusted publishing settings. In supply-chain security, package takeover is dangerous because one compromised release point can affect many consumers very quickly.
