A package name-and-version pair is the specific identifier made by combining a package’s name with one released version, such as a single gem release in RubyGems. It is more precise than the package name alone because the same project can have many versions, each with different code, metadata, or behavior.
In cyber security, this distinction matters because defenders often track risk at the release level. A malicious or abused package may be published under one name, but only certain versions contain harmful code, suspicious metadata, or automation triggers. Attackers also use large sets of name-and-version pairs to flood registries, test workflows, or hide activity across many releases. For defenders, indexing by this pair helps with alerting, allowlisting, incident response, and reproducible analysis, since it pinpoints exactly which artifact was installed, scanned, or abused.
