OWASP ASVS

An open standard for verifying web application security controls.

OWASP ASVS, the Application Security Verification Standard, is an open benchmark for checking whether a web application’s security controls are implemented correctly. It defines a structured set of requirements for areas such as authentication, session management, input validation, access control, cryptography, and error handling. Teams use it to move from vague security goals to testable controls.

In cyber security, ASVS matters because it supports repeatable verification. Developers and auditors can map application features to a target verification level and then test whether the controls actually work, rather than assuming a checklist is enough. In real defenses, ASVS helps guide secure design reviews, penetration testing, and continuous security testing. In attacks, the weaknesses ASVS targets are common entry points: broken login flows, missing authorization checks, insecure cookies, or poor input handling. Using ASVS does not make an application secure by itself, but it gives defenders a practical standard for measuring how close a web app is to being secure.
