An output format is the structure a system is expected to use when returning a response, such as a short summary, bullet list, JSON object, or fixed table. In AI prompting, specifying the output format reduces ambiguity and makes results easier to parse, compare, and automate. This matters in cyber security because security tools often need machine-readable output for alert triage, log enrichment, incident summaries, or ticket creation.
In real use, defenders often constrain an AI assistant to a strict schema so downstream systems can trust field names and data types. Attackers may try the opposite: they can prompt a model to ignore the requested format, hide warnings, or emit unsafe content in an easier-to-consume form. Clear format requirements help limit confusion, improve reliability, and support safer automation, especially when AI output feeds other security controls.
