Order metadata is the operational information attached to a purchase, such as order numbers, shipping status, warehouse routing, delivery timestamps, and fulfillment records. It is not usually the product itself, but it can still reveal a lot about a customer and a business process.
In cyber security, order metadata matters because it is often stored in logistics, payment, and customer-service systems that sit outside the main application. If attackers access it, they can use real order references, shipment details, or customer names to make phishing messages look legitimate, support account-recovery fraud, or map a company’s supply chain. Defenders reduce this risk by limiting who can view fulfillment data, encrypting stored records, logging access, and deleting metadata that is no longer needed. Strong vendor controls are also important when third-party logistics providers handle these records.
