An Order Management System (OMS) is the software layer that tracks a purchase from checkout through fulfillment, delivery, cancellations, and returns. It keeps order status, shipping details, refund state, and support actions in one workflow, which makes it central to modern e-commerce operations.
In cyber security, an OMS matters because it is a high-value target for account takeover, fraud, and social engineering. If an attacker can access a customer or staff account, they may change delivery addresses, request refunds, cancel orders, or alter return information. Defenders reduce this risk with multi-factor authentication, role-based access, approval controls for sensitive changes, and detailed audit trails. Strong logging and reconciliation also help merchants detect abuse, prove what happened during disputes, and recover from mistakes before they affect revenue or trust.
