Option

A command flag that changes how a tool behaves.

An option is a command flag that changes how a tool behaves. In command-line utilities, options refine the default action: they can increase verbosity, set timeouts, limit retries, or change output format. With tools like ping, options may control how many probes are sent or how results are displayed.

In cyber security, options matter because attackers and defenders both rely on precise command syntax. A defender may use options to make diagnostics repeatable during incident response, while an attacker may use them to scan quietly, speed up enumeration, or avoid detection. Knowing what each option does helps teams avoid mistakes, interpret results correctly, and spot suspicious use of legitimate tools. Good command literacy is a basic defense: the same utility can be safe, noisy, or evasive depending on the flags attached to it.
