Optical filter

a component that selectively passes or blocks certain light wavelengths.

An optical filter is a component that selectively passes or blocks specific wavelengths of light. It can be designed to transmit a narrow band, reject unwanted bands, or remove infrared, ultraviolet, or visible light depending on the application. In precision optics, filters help control what reaches a detector, camera, laser cavity, or sensor, making the optical signal cleaner and more predictable.

In cyber security, optical filters matter whenever light is part of a sensing or communication system. They are used to reduce ambient light, limit noise, and protect optical measurements from interference. In defense, filters can help sensor systems resist spoofing or blinding attempts by rejecting light outside the expected wavelength. In attacks, adversaries may exploit a system’s wavelength sensitivity by injecting light that a weak filter fails to block. Good filtering is therefore part of both signal integrity and physical security.
