Opt-in setting

A privacy control that requires active user permission before data is used for an extra purpose.

An opt-in setting is a privacy control that requires a user to take an active step before data can be used for an additional purpose, such as analytics, sharing, or model training. In security terms, it helps separate basic service operation from secondary processing, so the system does not assume consent by default.

Opt-in controls matter because many cyber risks start with overcollection or unexpected reuse of data. If voice, chat, or form inputs are stored and later repurposed, sensitive information can move into longer-lived records and broader access workflows. Attackers may try to exploit confusing consent screens, hidden defaults, or social engineering to push users into enabling broader data use. Defenders use opt-in settings alongside clear notices, granular permissions, audit logs, and data minimization to reduce exposure and prove that consent was obtained.
