Operationalisation

The process of turning a tool or model into a working security capability.

Operationalisation is the process of turning a tool, script, or machine-learning model into a usable security capability. In practice, that means wiring it into existing workflows: feeding it the right data, setting thresholds, defining who reviews alerts, and connecting its output to playbooks, ticketing, or automated containment steps. A model is not operationalised just because it works in a test environment; it must work reliably inside real security operations.

This matters because many security ideas fail at the handoff between detection and action. An AI system may spot suspicious behaviour, but if no team owns the alert, approvals are slow, or the output is hard to trust, the capability never reaches incident speed. Defenders operationalise AI to improve triage, prioritisation, and response. Attackers operationalise their own tooling too, using automation to scale phishing, scanning, or malware delivery. In both cases, the advantage comes from making the technology repeatable, governed, and fast enough to change outcomes.
