Operational sample material

Test or example files that can still contain sensitive business context.

Operational sample material is test, template, or example files used to support a business process, such as EDI samples, billing examples, or onboarding documents. Even when they are not “live” records, these files often mirror real workflows and may include partner names, account formats, identifiers, routing details, or internal conventions. That makes them valuable to attackers because they can reveal how a company does business.

In cyber security, this matters because sample material is often stored less carefully than production data. It may be copied into shared folders, sent by email, or left in development and staging systems. During extortion, intrusion, or reconnaissance, attackers may use these files to learn formats, impersonate partners, craft convincing phishing messages, or map related systems. Defenders should classify sample files as sensitive business data, limit access, sanitize examples before sharing, and remove embedded real-world details wherever possible.
