Operational outage

an unplanned interruption that stops a service from functioning normally.

An operational outage is an unplanned interruption that stops a service from functioning normally. It may affect a single application, a network segment, or an entire organization’s critical infrastructure. The cause is not always malicious: hardware failure, software bugs, misconfiguration, power loss, or process errors can all trigger the same visible result — users cannot reach the service they expect.

In cyber security, operational outages matter because availability is one of the core security goals. Attackers can exploit this by causing denial-of-service conditions, disrupting authentication, or targeting dependencies such as DNS, telecom, or cloud services. Defenders treat outages as both resilience and security problems: they build redundancy, monitor service health, test failover, and keep incident response plans ready. A fast recovery limits business damage, reduces confusion, and helps distinguish a technical failure from a deliberate attack.
