Operational ecosystem

The connected environment where people, processes, and systems affect each other.

An operational ecosystem is the connected environment in which people, processes, and systems influence one another. In cyber security, it includes users, business workflows, applications, devices, networks, and the rules that bind them together. A change in one part, such as a software update or a new approval process, can affect reliability, security, and safety across the whole environment.

This matters because attackers rarely exploit only one component. They look for weak links where access, trust, or coordination breaks down, then move through the ecosystem to reach more valuable assets. Defenders use the same view to build segmentation, least privilege, monitoring, and incident response that match how work really happens. Treating the ecosystem as connected helps teams spot cascading failures before they become breaches or outages.
