Operational datastore

A database layer used by live applications to read and write production data.

An operational datastore is the production database layer that live applications use to read and write active business data. It is different from analytics stores or archives because it sits on the critical path for real users, APIs, and automated agents. In modern enterprise systems, it may hold customer records, transactions, permissions, or the working state of AI workflows.

From a security perspective, this layer matters because compromise can affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability at once. Attackers often target operational datastores through stolen credentials, misconfigured access controls, application flaws, or ransomware. If they can read from it, they may exfiltrate sensitive data; if they can write to it, they may corrupt records, alter privileges, or poison downstream processes. Defenders protect it with strong authentication, least privilege, network segmentation, encryption, audit logging, and tested backups. In AI platforms, the datastore is especially sensitive because agents and applications may depend on it continuously, making integrity and recovery controls just as important as access control.
