An operational bottleneck is a step, resource, or decision point that limits the speed of an entire workflow. When work piles up there, improving other parts of the process may have little effect on overall completion time. Bottlenecks can result from limited capacity, slow approvals, outdated information, or poor coordination.
In cybersecurity, bottlenecks can delay patching, incident response, or access reviews, leaving systems exposed for longer. Attackers may also exploit overloaded teams or slow approval processes to extend their access or avoid detection. Defenders can identify bottlenecks by tracking queues, handoff delays, and response times, then improve staffing, automate routine tasks, or clarify responsibilities. Better data and tools can help, but they do not remove delays unless the underlying process changes.
