Open-weights model

An AI model whose weights are released for external use, inspection, and local deployment.

An open-weights model is an AI system whose trained parameters, or “weights,” are released so others can inspect them, run the model locally, and integrate it into their own tools. Unlike a closed API-only model, an open-weights release can be tested outside the vendor’s infrastructure, which makes it easier to reproduce results and evaluate behavior under different settings.

In cybersecurity, that openness cuts both ways. Defenders can use open-weights models for offline code review, malware triage, vulnerability detection, and red-team testing without sending sensitive data to a third party. At the same time, attackers may also download the same model, tune it for abuse, or run it at scale without rate limits. That is why an open-weights model is not automatically safer or more trustworthy: security teams still need sandboxing, logging, human review, and strict access controls before using it near vulnerable code or sensitive systems.
