Open VSX is an extension registry for editors that are compatible with Visual Studio Code. It lets developers publish and install add-ons, themes, and tools from a shared marketplace rather than from a single vendor store.
In security terms, Open VSX matters because extension platforms are part of the software supply chain. Attackers can abuse the trust users place in familiar names by publishing lookalike packages, a tactic often called extension spoofing. A malicious extension may request access to files, settings, processes, or build-related workflows, which can expose secrets or alter code. Defenders should verify publisher identity, compare names carefully, review update history, and treat extensions on developer workstations and CI-connected systems as security-sensitive software.
