Opcode

The machine-readable code that identifies a processor instruction.

An opcode is the machine-readable part of an instruction that tells a processor which operation to perform. In assembly language, the mnemonic you read or write is the human-friendly form; the opcode is the encoded byte or bit pattern the CPU actually interprets. Different architectures use different opcode formats, and the same high-level action may be implemented by multiple encodings or by microcode underneath.

In cyber security, opcodes matter because attackers and defenders both work close to the machine level. Reverse engineers use opcode analysis to disassemble malware, recognize shellcode, and understand what code will really do after compilation or packing. Defenders use it in sandboxing, emulation, binary instrumentation, and exploit detection. Because opcodes define exact processor behavior, they are also important for compatibility work and for spotting cases where software assumptions do not match the hardware’s real instruction set.
