Onboarding remote

the hiring and access setup process for employees who work offsite.

Remote onboarding is the hiring and access setup process for employees who work offsite. It usually includes identity proofing, device shipment, account creation, security training, and approval for internal systems. In cyber security, this process matters because it is a trust decision: the organization is not only issuing a laptop or credentials, it is deciding that the person behind the screen is legitimate.

Attackers can abuse weak remote onboarding by using stolen identities, forged documents, or social engineering to obtain real accounts and company devices. Once access is granted, their activity may look like normal employee behavior, making detection harder than a typical intrusion. Defenders reduce this risk with strong identity verification, step-up checks for high-risk hires, limited initial privileges, multi-factor authentication, and careful review of shipping, provisioning, and approval workflows. Remote onboarding is therefore part of the attack surface, not just an HR procedure.
