On-premises software is software that an organization installs and runs inside its own infrastructure, such as internal servers, virtual machines, or managed data centers, instead of consuming it as a hosted cloud service. The organization usually controls the operating system, network exposure, access policies, patching, and backups.
In cyber security, on-premises deployment matters because it often sits close to sensitive systems like identity services, databases, file stores, and automation workflows. That makes a vulnerable product a strong target for attackers seeking lateral movement, credential theft, or data access. Defenders must treat patching, segmentation, and service hardening as urgent, since exposure can persist until the organization applies updates. Unlike a SaaS platform, the security burden stays with the operator, so missed patches and weak internal controls can turn a single flaw into a broad enterprise compromise.
