Offensive operations

Cyber actions designed to disrupt, degrade, or interfere with a target rather than only defend against it.

Offensive operations are cyber actions intended to disrupt, degrade, or interfere with a target, rather than only protect systems. They can include disabling infrastructure, deleting malicious tooling, or making an attacker’s command and control unreliable.

In cyber security, offensive operations matter because they can pressure criminal groups more directly than monitoring or blocking alone. They may be used by governments, incident responders, or highly controlled private teams, but they require tight authorization, clear rules of engagement, and strong technical precision. If the target is misidentified or the action spreads too far, the result can be collateral damage to unrelated systems, users, or data.

In real attacks, adversaries already use offensive tactics to break availability or interrupt operations. In defense, the same logic appears in disruption efforts such as sinkholing, infrastructure takedowns, or other bounded countermeasures designed to reduce an attacker’s reach.
