Off-grid refrigeration is cooling designed to operate without relying on a central electricity grid. It may use locally generated power, such as solar energy, or passive methods that need little or no electricity. Examples include insulated storage paired with solar-powered equipment and evaporative cooling, which uses heat absorbed as water evaporates.
It matters where outages, remote locations, or disrupted supplies could make grid-dependent cooling unreliable. In cyber security and infrastructure planning, reducing dependence on a single power source can improve resilience, though connected controls and backup systems still need protection and maintenance. Real designs must suit their climate and cooling needs: evaporative methods, for example, work best in dry conditions and do not replace powered refrigeration in every setting.
