Numerical model

A mathematical representation that is solved by computation rather than by direct observation.

A numerical model is a mathematical representation of a real system that is solved by computation instead of direct observation. In cyber security, it turns messy activity such as network traffic, host behavior, or packet timing into variables and equations that software can process. The output is usually an estimate, forecast, or score rather than a perfect description of reality.

Numerical models matter because defenders use them to detect anomalies, estimate risk, and test how systems might behave under load or attack. For example, a model can help identify unusual login patterns, simulate malware spread, or compare expected and observed traffic flows. They are also a target for attackers: if the input data is manipulated, the model can be biased, delayed, or made less reliable. That is why numerical models are useful, but only when their assumptions, data quality, and limits are understood.
