An npm access token is a credential used to authenticate to the npm registry. It can grant permissions such as installing private packages, publishing new versions, or managing package metadata, depending on how it is scoped. Because it sits on the path to software distribution, an exposed token is a high-value target.
In supply-chain attacks, stolen npm tokens may let an attacker publish a malicious release under a trusted package name or alter a package owner’s workflow. Defenders reduce this risk by using the narrowest possible token scope, storing tokens in protected secret stores, rotating them regularly, and limiting where publish credentials can be used. Treating registry tokens like production secrets helps prevent a package update from becoming a delivery channel for malware.
