Notification permissions

The browser setting that lets a website send alerts to a user.

Notification permissions are the browser settings that let a website send alerts to a user, even when the page is not active. The prompt is usually shown after a site asks for access, and the user can allow or block it. This permission turns a normal website into a channel that can interrupt the user later.

In cyber security, notification permissions matter because they are easy to abuse for phishing, scam offers, fake security warnings, and malicious download lures. Attackers may use urgent-looking messages to borrow trust from the browser interface instead of from the webpage itself. Defenders reduce this risk with permission controls, site-reputation checks, abuse detection, and regular review of granted permissions. Users should only approve notifications from sites they trust and remove anything suspicious.
