Networked device

Hardware that can communicate over a network for monitoring, control, or updates.

A networked device is hardware that can send or receive data over a network for monitoring, control, configuration, or software updates. Examples include industrial sensors, robots, cameras, smart appliances, and power inverters. The network connection makes the device more useful, but it also turns it into part of a larger attack surface.

In cyber security, networked devices matter because remote features can be abused if authentication, update channels, or exposed services are weak. Attackers may try to change settings, install malicious firmware, or use the device as a foothold into a wider environment. Defenders review these devices for default credentials, unnecessary ports, insecure wireless links, and unsigned updates. They also restrict access, segment networks, and monitor device behavior so that connectivity improves operations without creating easy paths for compromise.
