Network technician

A worker who installs and maintains connectivity infrastructure such as cabling and fiber.

A network technician installs, tests, and maintains the physical infrastructure that carries data: Ethernet cabling, fiber links, patch panels, switches, and sometimes wireless backhaul. In data centers, offices, and industrial sites, this work turns network design into working connectivity. The job is practical and hands-on, and it often includes tracing faults, replacing damaged cables, certifying link quality, and keeping documentation accurate.

In cyber security, network technicians matter because the network’s physical layer is part of the attack surface. Bad patching, exposed ports, unsecured closets, or poorly labeled fiber can create outages, enable unauthorized access, or make monitoring harder. Defenders rely on technicians to enforce port control, document cable paths, support segmentation, and verify that equipment changes match approved designs. In real operations, good cabling and clean change management reduce both misconfiguration risk and opportunities for tampering.
