Network access

The ability of a device to connect to online services and exchange data over a network.

Network access is the ability of a device to connect to online services and exchange data over a network. In security work, this matters because the moment a system gains connectivity, it becomes reachable by remote users, services, and attackers. A device that was safe while offline can face scanning, credential theft, malicious updates, or protocol abuse once it is allowed onto the internet or a local corporate network.

Defenders control network access with firewalls, authentication, VPNs, segmentation, and allowlists, limiting what a device can reach and who can reach it. On legacy systems, such as older Macs or embedded devices, network access is especially sensitive because outdated software may not support modern encryption, patching, or trust checks. The key security question is not only whether a device can connect, but whether that connection is constrained enough to stay safe.
