An NBFC, or non-banking financial company, is a firm that offers financial services such as lending, leasing, or asset financing without holding a full banking license. NBFCs often serve customers and businesses through digital platforms, partner networks, and specialized products, which can make them operationally nimble but heavily dependent on technology.
In cyber security, NBFCs matter because they handle sensitive identity, credit, and transaction data while relying on uptime, trust, and regulatory compliance. Attackers may target them with phishing, credential theft, ransomware, API abuse, or supply-chain compromise to disrupt operations or steal records. Defenders focus on strong authentication, segmentation, logging, backup recovery, third-party risk management, and rapid incident validation. For an NBFC, even a rumor of compromise can create major pressure, so the ability to quickly verify claims and preserve evidence is as important as preventing the attack itself.
