Multi-stage routing

A chain of redirects or filters that controls which visitors reach the final lure.

Multi-stage routing is a delivery pattern where a request passes through several redirects, checks, or filters before the final page is shown. Each step can examine the visitor’s IP address, browser traits, cookies, or automation signals and then decide whether to continue, block, or send the user somewhere else.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers use it to hide phishing pages, malware downloads, and credential prompts from scanners and sandboxes. A first URL may look harmless, while the real lure is only exposed to selected targets or real browsers. Defenders should therefore trace the full redirect chain, inspect short-lived domains, and correlate server-side behavior, not just the first link. The same idea can also help defenders by gating high-risk content, but in attacks it is mainly used to reduce detection and frustrate analysis.
