Multi-material printing

A 3D printing method that uses more than one material in a single build.

Multi-material printing is a 3D printing method that combines two or more materials in a single build. A printer may switch between rigid and flexible polymers, conductive and insulating filaments, or structural material and soluble support material to create one finished part with different properties in different sections.

In cyber security, this matters because it expands what can be built for both attack and defense. Defenders use it to prototype custom enclosures, sensor mounts, tamper-evident parts, and test fixtures for hardware and device research. Attackers may use it to fabricate specialized adapters, grips, housings, or decoys that blend hard and soft materials for better fit or concealment. The security relevance is practical: material compatibility, layer bonding, and print settings affect strength, heat resistance, and electrical behavior, which can influence whether a part protects hardware or helps compromise it.
