Multi-cloud environment

An architecture that spreads workloads across more than one cloud provider or region.

A multi-cloud environment is an architecture that distributes workloads across two or more cloud providers, or across multiple regions within a provider. Teams use it to improve resilience, reduce vendor lock-in, place services closer to users, and balance cost or performance requirements. In practice, applications, data pipelines, identity systems, and storage may all live in different cloud accounts or platforms.

From a cyber security perspective, multi-cloud expands the attack surface. Each provider has different IAM models, logging formats, network controls, and configuration tools, so misconfigurations can slip through more easily. Attackers often exploit weak identity controls, exposed storage, overly permissive roles, or inconsistent security policies between environments. Defenders use centralized policy, strong authentication, continuous monitoring, and segmentation to keep access consistent and to spot unusual cross-cloud traffic. Good visibility is essential, because failures and intrusions can hide in the handoff between clouds.
