MTV stands for Migration Toolkit for Virtualization, a toolset used to move virtual machines from one platform to another. It helps convert disks, copy VM data, and preserve configuration during a migration, which makes it useful when organizations change hypervisors, consolidate infrastructure, or recover workloads.
In cyber security, MTV matters because migration workflows touch sensitive assets: VM disks, credentials, storage backends, and trust relationships between systems. If an attacker can tamper with migration tooling, they may disrupt availability, redirect data, or exploit weak access controls around the transfer path. Defenders use MTV carefully, verifying source and destination integrity, limiting permissions, and testing fallback methods. Security teams also track dependencies such as disk-format libraries and storage APIs, because a missing or blocked component can stop a planned migration just as effectively as an attack.
