MTPD means Maximum Tolerable Period of Disruption. It is the longest time a business can remain without a critical service before the damage becomes unacceptable. Unlike a technical uptime goal, MTPD is a business limit: it reflects when lost revenue, safety risk, legal exposure, or loss of customer trust crosses the line.
MTPD matters because it helps set recovery priorities. During a cyber incident such as ransomware, destructive malware, or a major outage, defenders use MTPD alongside RTO and RPO to decide which systems must return first and how quickly. A well-run business impact analysis defines these numbers before an incident, so recovery planning is based on real dependency and tolerance data, not guesswork. If MTPD is too optimistic or outdated, a plan may look strong on paper but still fail under pressure.
