MTA-STS

A policy layer that helps prevent downgrade and redirection attacks against SMTP TLS.

MTA-STS, short for Mail Transfer Agent Strict Transport Security, is a policy mechanism for SMTP that tells sending mail servers to use TLS when delivering to a domain. A domain publishes its policy, and compliant senders verify it before connecting to the recipient’s mail servers. This helps prevent downgrade attacks, where an attacker strips STARTTLS and forces weaker delivery, and redirection attacks, where mail is pushed to a rogue or misconfigured host.

In practice, MTA-STS strengthens transport security between mail servers, but it does not encrypt the message content end to end. Defenders use it to reduce interception and tampering during transit, especially for domains that handle sensitive mail. It is most effective when paired with correct TLS certificates, stable MX records, and DNS protections such as DNSSEC or good operational hygiene. If the policy is absent or ignored, attackers may be able to intercept mail by exploiting fallback behavior in SMTP delivery.
