Mounting

The process of making storage accessible to a host system for reading or writing.

Mounting is the process of making a storage device or filesystem available to an operating system so files can be read or written. When a card, disk, or USB device is mounted, the host recognizes its structure and assigns a path for access. If mounting fails, the media may look empty, corrupted, or dead even when the data is still present.

In cyber security, mounting matters because investigators often need to safely access evidence, logs, or malware samples without changing them. Defenders may mount disks read-only to avoid contamination, while attackers may try to mount stolen media or image files to extract secrets. A device that will not mount is not automatically lost: the cause may be filesystem damage, bad connectors, or power faults in the hardware. In incident response, separating mount failure from true data loss helps avoid unnecessary writes, damage, or risky repair attempts.
