Monitoring configuration

Settings that define how systems are observed, alerted on, and administered.

Monitoring configuration is the set of settings that determines how a system is watched, what events are recorded, and when alerts are sent to operators. It covers log sources, metrics, retention periods, thresholds, notification rules, dashboards, and administrative access to the monitoring tools themselves.

In cyber security, monitoring configuration matters because detection is only as good as the data and rules behind it. Weak settings can hide intrusion attempts, flood teams with noisy alerts, or leave logs unavailable when they are needed most. Attackers often try to disable monitoring, change alert thresholds, or tamper with log collection so their activity stays quiet. Defenders use carefully reviewed monitoring configuration to preserve evidence, detect unusual access, track privilege changes, and confirm that isolation and recovery controls are working as intended.
