Model Portability

The ability to move workflows from one AI model provider to another with limited rework.

Model portability is the ability to move an AI workflow from one model provider to another with limited rework. In practice, this means prompts, agent settings, tool calls, and evaluation cases can be reused or adapted without rebuilding the system from scratch. It matters because AI-assisted development and security tools often depend on external models whose behavior, context limits, and instruction-following style can differ even when the product interface stays the same.

In cyber security, poor portability creates operational and security risk. A model swap can change how code is reviewed, how secrets are handled, or how multi-step agents use internal tools. Defenders reduce that risk by versioning prompts and tool schemas, keeping regression tests for representative tasks, and rechecking access controls after migration. Attackers can also benefit from lock-in: if one provider is removed or degraded, brittle workflows may fail quietly, creating gaps in detection, review, or automation.
