Model backend

The underlying AI model or provider that performs the actual generation task.

A model backend is the underlying AI model or provider that actually performs a generation task after a user submits a prompt, image, or other input. In many products, the visible app is only a front end: it sends requests to one or more backends, which may be hosted internally or by a third party. The backend determines the model’s capabilities, safety behavior, logging, latency, and data-handling rules.

This matters in cyber security because the interface a user sees may hide a longer service chain with different trust boundaries. A hostile or misconfigured backend can expose prompts, retain uploads, weaken moderation, or produce outputs that bypass expected policy controls. Defenders therefore verify which backend is in use, what terms govern data processing, and whether third-party providers receive sensitive content. In attacks, threat actors may target weak backend integrations, API keys, or routing logic; in defense, teams audit those paths to reduce leakage and enforce provenance, retention, and access control.
